01Try it

Seven real question types. Pick one.

The interviewer asks

A mild steel bar is pulled in a tensile test until it breaks. Sketch the engineering stress-strain curve you would expect, and tell me what is happening at each stage.

In the product you also talk or type your reasoning, and the interviewer asks follow-ups. Here, just the sketch.

03Out loud

An interviewer who keeps asking why.

Mock interview · actuators
  1. Interviewer

You are designing a rotary actuator for a robot arm: 500 mm reach, 20 kg payload. What type of drive would you use?
  2. You, spoken

A high-ratio gearbox. I get the torque without an oversized motor, assuming speed is not a major constraint.
  3. Interviewer

Why not a high-torque direct-drive motor? A gearbox adds failure points and transmission losses, doesn't it?
  4. You, spoken

True, but direct drive needs a much larger motor for the same torque. I would take the gearbox to keep the actuator compact.
  5. Interviewer

Okay. In continuous operation the motor overheats even though it is below its rated torque. What is happening, and what would you change?

Held up

You tied the holding condition to reverse efficiency instead of just the gear ratio.

Missed

You never stated the payload torque or the efficiency you assumed, so the number could not be checked.

Next

Redo it with a number: what reverse efficiency makes 8 kg at 0.6 m hold?

05Coverage

Everything a mechanical interview covers.

First principles

Forces, stress, energy, flow and heat. The fundamentals, and whether you can apply them.

Design and build

Choosing materials, processes and tolerances, and defending the choice.

Motion and systems

Actuators, sensors, valves, control and the models that check them.

08FAQ

Questions

Is this just a database of mechanical engineering interview questions?

No. It is designed to help you work through engineering problems, understand the underlying concepts, explain your reasoning and improve how you approach technical questions.

Is this only for mechanical engineers?

We start with mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering is coming early next year. If that is your field, join early access and we will tell you when it opens.

What kind of questions will I be practising?

Everything from mechanics of materials, machine design and material selection to manufacturing, GD&T, tolerance stack-ups, robotics, testing and failure analysis.

Are these actual interview questions from companies like Tesla, SpaceX and Apple?

The platform includes company-focused preparation and engineering questions relevant to these roles. Not every question is an actual previously asked interview question. We distinguish reported interview questions from practice questions.

I am a recent graduate. Is this suitable for me?

Absolutely. Whether you are preparing for your first mechanical engineering job or moving into a new engineering discipline, you can practise fundamentals and work progressively through more challenging problems.

Will I get questions based on my resume and the job description?

We are still working on this feature and it will be out soon. Stay tuned.

Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. You can cancel your recurring subscription according to your billing terms, and your access continues until the end of your paid period. The week pass is a one-time payment and does not renew.

Can I get a refund?

No. Paid plans give you immediate access to the full bank, so all sales are final, except where the law gives you a right to withdraw. The free plan is real, so try it first. Details are in the refund policy.
